EXPLANIATION

For my recent work on 'take a seat', it occurred to me that 'sit' is actually a painful and harmful time for me as I suffer from a herniated disc. But before the onset of my back pain I was always sitting for long periods of time, either resting or working, and I never realised that this process was a huge detriment to my own health. From this point of view, I can't help but think that every woman, especially in East Asia, inevitably lives in a social environment that is extremely misogynistic and unaware of it. This environment domesticates everyone, making women lose confidence in their own abilities while encouraging men to divide up the benefits that are rightfully theirs. But because we are so used to this division, not every woman is able to recognise it as oppression and exploitation.

The work I wanted to create with this theme in mind was actually inspired by two of Lee Bul's works, Carvings and the white dolls she used several times in the Sorry for Suffering. In the Carvings, a swaddled baby is surrounded by a costume she has placed in a barren field, and in Sorry for Suffering, the ghastly white dolls look as if they are attached to her body. These reminded me of the point that many East Asian horror works try to make to women, that aborted foetuses will turn into spirits to avenge their mothers after death. I had to regard this as a form of discipline for women. I have seen too many women in the news and in my daily life who have been kidnapped by "childbirth", who have been deprived of their right to work and become housewives and then later rejected by their husbands or families because they are supposedly "no longer able to work"; or successful women are discriminated against and attacked for not having children. As I tried to understand more about how all this is constructed by human, or male, I found that I could not draw any conclusions from my 18 years of life and reading. So I wondered if there was an ultimate solution to these gender issues.

I looked back at the nude female figures I had drawn in the 100 drawing exercise, I suddenly realised that if society no longer had a concept of 'gender', and parents no longer raised their children in different ways based on their biological sex, but allowed everyone the freedom to choose what they wanted to be. No gender issues will continue to exist.
